The good divorce

While no couple begins their marriage anticipating divorce, a relationship can deteriorate for any number of reasons. With sensationalized stories about feuding celebrity couples dominating the headlines and cautionary tales regarding acrimonious divorces, you’d be forgiven for thinking that parting ways with a partner is a surefire way to end up miserable.

Dispelling the myth of the toxic divorce

As it turns out, divorce need not be horrible. With the increasingly common practice of seeking alternative forms of dispute resolution and other strategies aimed at fostering a positive outcome, former couples are finding that it is indeed possible to move forward without falling apart.

Gone are the days when divorce meant the inevitable devotion of time and resources to contentious courtroom battles. Today, separating spouses are finding tremendous benefit in working together as they move apart. For parents, this can mean prioritizing the needs of their children and focusing on creating a strong relationship as co-parents.

A welcome alternative to litigation

Other couples find that taking control of their divorce allows them to find mutually beneficial ways to end the relationship without resorting to anger, hostility, or other potentially damaging tactics. With mediation and arbitration, divorcing spouses remain firmly in charge of their relationship and are able to work together to find a way to establish workable solutions.

Despite what popular culture leads us to believe, divorce doesn’t have to be a devastating life event. For couples who come to the conclusion that they would best enjoy life separately, finding a strategy to facilitate the process in a non-adversarial way can yield a positive, mutually beneficial outcome.
