For most people, finding happiness in life is important. Accordingly, people generally go through life making decisions they believe will contribute to their happiness. These decisions can be about minor things, such as what kind of sandwich to order for lunch, as well as things that are much more life changing. The decision to divorce could fall into the latter category. This is true regardless of one’s age and as they baby boomer generation ages, more members of that group than many might suspect, are opting to end what may have been a long-term marriage.

While in the end every divorce reaches the same conclusion—the end of a marriage—the process itself will vary some depending on the specific circumstances of those who are involved. For example, while child custody and support is usually not an issue for couples that are a part of the baby boomer generation, because these individuals are nearing or at retirement age, the division of assets is often extremely important.

When a couple divorces each spouse essentially starts a new chapter of life. In most cases both would like to have a sense of financial security so that they can really enjoy the period of life. To make sure you get what you deserve or, in the alternative, do not give too much away, it is important to work with a lawyer. That individual can guide you through the process helping to gather the information necessary to make good decisions.
